My Journey to Saudi Arabia for Work.
I began my journey to Saudi Arabia with a multi-leg flight from Lagos, Nigeria. The first flight was over 7 hours to Doha, Qatar. After a short 4-hour layover, I boarded my connecting flight which was around 1.5 hours to Saudi Arabia.
I had ensured I had all the necessary documents for entry and work – my passport, yellow fever vaccination card, and flight ticket. Upon arrival in Saudi, the company driver was waiting for me as planned with my name on a sign. I took some time to exchange currency and set up communications by getting a local SIM card and data.
My first challenge was the language barrier, as the driver spoke little English. However, he drove me safely to the company accommodation in an SUV. I was surprised by the hot weather, as the climate is quite extreme between very hot and very cold seasons.
After checking into my furnished apartment, I met my coordinator who welcomed me warmly. He advised me to rest before starting work the next day. The induction process involved 14 safety courses over 3 days.
Soon I was sent out to the oilfields for my first assignment as a Well test data engineer. However, the software used was different than what I was familiar with in Nigeria. Due to my strong interview, I was placed on the day shift without proper training.
Working long hours, I learned the new system and operations through self-study and reaching out to night-shift colleagues. The work processes and team dynamics differed from my experience. Food options were also an adjustment from my usual cuisine.
Despite challenges with language, climate, food, and being thrust into fieldwork without training, I persevered through self-directed learning. Safety is taken very seriously in Saudi Arabia. While an adjustment, it has been an invaluable learning experience so far in my career.
