The VHR group leads the NeuroHand Project, a UKRI-funded initiative developing a soft robotic exoskeleton glove designed to restore hand function in stroke survivors.

This new Postdoctoral Research Associate position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge translational robotics and bring innovative healthcare technologies from the lab to clinical practice.


About the Role

The successful candidate will join the NeuroHand Project, working on the development, testing, and commercialisation of a tendon-driven robotic exoskeleton glove for home-based stroke rehabilitation.

The post-holder will:

  • Lead the integration of embedded control systems and multimodal intent detection (including visual, force, and voice inputs).
  • Contribute to real-time control software and the design of remote monitoring interfaces.
  • Collaborate with clinicians, regulatory consultants, and innovation experts to prepare ISO 13485–compliant documentation and technical files for CE/UKCA certification.
  • Support clinical user trials and contribute to patient and public involvement (PPI) sessions.
  • Engage in commercialisation activities, potentially leading to a spin-out venture.

This post offers the chance to work in a multidisciplinary environment with experts in robotics, AI, clinical rehabilitation, and regulatory science — and to make a direct impact on the lives of individuals with upper-limb impairment following stroke.


Key Responsibilities

  • Develop control algorithms and embedded systems for soft robotics.
  • Implement multimodal sensing using vision, force, and tactile data.
  • Perform real-time signal processing and interface design.
  • Oversee data collection, analysis, and reporting from clinical trials.
  • Collaborate across academic, industrial, and clinical teams.
  • Contribute to peer-reviewed publications, technical documentation, and knowledge transfer activities.

About You

To succeed in this role, candidates must demonstrate strong technical, analytical, and communication skills, as well as a passion for translational robotics research.

Essential Criteria

  • PhD (or thesis submitted) in Robotics, Computer Vision, AI, or Biomedical Engineering.
  • Expertise in exoskeleton design, soft robotics, or wearable devices.
  • Hands-on experience with sensing systems — depth cameras (RealSense), event-based cameras (DVXplorer), and tactile or force sensors.
  • Proficiency in C++ and Python, including robotics frameworks such as ROS.
  • Experience with computer vision and deep learning implementations.
  • Strong publication record in relevant fields.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively.
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines and manage complex projects.

Desirable Criteria

  • Publications in top-tier robotics or AI conferences/journals (e.g., CVPR, ICCV, TRO, Science Robotics).
  • Experience in medical device development and knowledge of ISO 13485 standards.
  • Experience conducting clinical or user trials.
  • Familiarity with assistive control algorithms for rehabilitation robotics.
  • Contributions to patent applications or spin-out ventures.
