The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) β a world-renowned think tank providing objective analysis on geopolitical, military, and geo-economic developments β is seeking a Research Fellow for its Middle East office in Manama, Bahrain.

π Position Overview
As a Research Fellow (Middle East Policy), you will play a vital role in the Instituteβs regional work, conducting high-level research and producing original, policy-relevant analysis on pressing Middle Eastern issues.
The successful candidate will report directly to the Executive Director, IISSβMiddle East, and the Senior Fellow for Middle East Policy, while collaborating closely with international colleagues and research teams.
π Key Responsibilities
The Research Fellow will:
- Conduct independent, high-quality research on at least one of the following themes:
- Energy policy and security
- Technology and geopolitics
- Infrastructure and connectivity in the Middle East and neighboring regions
- Contribute to IISS publications, reports, and events through policy briefs, journal articles, and commentaries.
- Participate in and support advisory and fundraising activities, enhancing the Instituteβs impact and visibility.
- Mentor and supervise junior researchers within the Middle East office.
- Represent IISS at international conferences, media briefings, and strategic dialogues.
π Qualifications & Experience
Essential Requirements:
- Strong analytical credentials with experience in academia, government, journalism, or the private sector.
- Advanced knowledge of Middle Eastern political and security dynamics.
- Proven record of published research or thought leadership.
- Postgraduate degree in Middle Eastern Studies, International Relations, Political Science, or a related discipline.
- Proficiency in English and at least one Middle Eastern language.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct field research and write persuasively for academic and policy audiences.
Desirable:
- Experience living and conducting research in the Middle East.
- Familiarity with regional policy institutions, multilateral organizations, or international NGOs.
