Fully Funded PhD Opportunities in Embedded Low-Power Photoacoustic Imaging Systems at the University of Auckland

Are you passionate about biomedical engineering, physics, or computer science? The University of Auckland, New Zealand, is offering fully funded PhD scholarships in the exciting field of embedded low-power photoacoustic (PA) imaging systems.

About the Research

Photoacoustic imaging is a groundbreaking technology that combines light and sound to visualize molecular and structural changes in tissue—non-invasively and in real time. This project focuses on developing portable, low-cost, and wearable PA imaging devices for clinical applications such as dermatology, rheumatology, and vascular diagnostics.

Project Highlights

As a PhD student, you will:

  • Simulate and optimize PA system designs for real-world applications.
  • Prototype compact, multi-wavelength hardware using laser diodes and ultrasound receivers.
  • Develop innovative image reconstruction algorithms for accurate functional imaging.
  • Work on end-to-end system development—from physics to algorithms.

You will also benefit from strong supervision, interdisciplinary collaboration, and opportunities to travel for conferences and international research visits.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants should meet the PhD admission requirements of the University of Auckland. Strong candidates may come from backgrounds such as:

  • Physics or Computer Science
  • Biomedical, Electrical, or Optical Engineering
  • Acoustics, Imaging, or related fields

Skills in numerical modeling, hardware prototyping, optics, ultrasound, or coding (Python/MATLAB) are desirable, but enthusiasm to learn is equally valued.

Scholarship & Funding

  • Stipend: NZ$34,569 per year (tax-free)
  • Tuition fees covered (fully funded)
  • Research support funding for travel, experiments, and collaborations
  • Duration: 3 years

Application Process & Deadline

Interested candidates should prepare:

  • A detailed CV (including academic background, research experience, and references)
  • Academic transcripts

📧 Applications should be sent directly to the listed supervisor at talia.xu@auckland.ac.nz
Deadline: October 12, 2025
