Overview
The University of Glasgow is inviting applications for a Research Assistant or Research Associate to support groundbreaking research in the area of gut immunology and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). This role forms part of the newly established Gut Translational Research Group, led by Professor Gwo-tzer Ho at the School of Infection and Immunity.
This team brings together leading immunologists, clinical researchers, and translational scientists working to better understand Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis—conditions affecting over 300,000 individuals in the UK.
This position is ideal for candidates seeking to advance their academic career, engage in high-impact clinical research, and work with cutting-edge multi-omic datasets, organoid models, and immune cell co-cultures.
Research Project Focus
The successful candidate will:
- Investigate gut repair and regeneration mechanisms in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).
- Work with human-derived organoids, epithelial and immune cells, and advanced co-culture systems.
- Explore the role of mitochondria and immunometabolism in immune responses.
- Contribute to multidisciplinary collaborations with clinicians, immunologists, and data scientists.
- Support publication efforts, grant proposals, reports, and conference presentations.
This role offers professional growth, including opportunities to gain experience at the academic-industry interface.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct research independently and collaboratively.
- Maintain lab records, analyze results, and produce technical reports.
- Publish in high-quality peer-reviewed journals.
- Present research locally and internationally.
- Support research funding proposal development.
- Participate in lab mentoring and supervision of students.
- Contribute to teaching and academic service as required.
Applicants for Grade 7 should demonstrate strong research independence, leadership ability, and a growing publication record.
Required Qualifications
For Grade 6 Applicants (Research Assistant):
- Bachelor’s degree (SCQF Level 10 or equivalent) in Immunology or a related field.
- Demonstrated knowledge of immunology.
For Grade 7 Applicants (Research Associate):
- PhD (SCQF Level 12) in Immunology or related discipline, or equivalent experience.
- Experience designing human experimental studies (e.g., organoids, immune cell culture).
Desired Technical Skills (Advantageous but Not Mandatory)
- High-dimensional flow cytometry, confocal microscopy, RNA-seq, spatial transcriptomics
- Gene manipulation techniques (e.g., CRISPR)
- Metabolic assays (e.g., Seahorse, SCENITH, METFLOW)
- Experience in bioinformatics and multi-omic data interpretation
