Lead Advanced RF Research in Partnership with NIST

The University of Colorado Boulder, in collaboration with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), invites applications for the role of Senior Research Associate under the Professional Research Experience Program (PREP).

This prestigious part-time research opportunity focuses on developing and leading cutting-edge research in radio frequency (RF) systems, electromagnetic compatibility, and spectrum metrology. The successful candidate will contribute to national innovation in spectrum science through collaborative projects with federal, academic, and industry stakeholders.

About the NIST–CU Boulder PREP Program

The Professional Research Experience Program (PREP) is a long-standing collaboration between NIST and CU Boulder, providing research opportunities to scientists, postdoctoral researchers, and students at all levels.

PREP participants work side-by-side with NIST scientists in world-class facilities, gaining exposure to groundbreaking research across disciplines such as:

  • Physics and Engineering
  • Computer Science and Electronics
  • Spectrum and Communication Technologies
  • Nanoscale and Materials Science

This specific role is within the Applied Systems Metrology Group, part of NIST’s Spectrum Technology & Research Divisionβ€”a leader in spectrum innovation and electromagnetic standards.


Key Responsibilities

As a Senior Research Associate, you will play a leading role in advancing spectrum science and RF systems research. Core responsibilities include:

  • Designing and executing research plans in RF spectrum metrology and electromagnetic compatibility.
  • Developing innovative measurement techniques for interference analysis, dynamic spectrum sharing, and RF propagation modeling.
  • Applying AI and Machine Learning methods to spectrum analysis and optimization.
  • Presenting technical findings to stakeholders across academia, government, and industry.
  • Publishing research results in peer-reviewed journals and technical reports.
  • Mentoring junior researchers and fostering collaborations with universities and scientific organizations.

Salary and Benefits

πŸ’° Annual Salary: $70,000 – $105,000 (for 50% appointment)

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline
  • 15+ years of experience in relevant research or industry work

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expertise in radio frequency engineering and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)
  • Proven record of publications, patents, or standards contributions
  • Experience with mobile communications, radar systems, telemetry, or wireless networks
  • Demonstrated leadership in applied research or team supervision
  • Strong presentation and technical writing skills

This is a part-time, research-intensive position based in Boulder, Colorado, one of the top-ranked U.S. cities for innovation and quality of life.
